My job would be located in Avondale. Are there places around there to live as a young professional? I've seen that Scottsdale and Tempe are nice places, but it seems like the traffic would be a little too much to handle. I'm coming from Philadelphia, I imagine the two cities are vastly different. How is the nightlife? Is it easy to get to fun bars, clubs, concerts, etc. from the Avondale area?

From Tempe or Scottsdale to Avondale would be a real nasty commute everyday. The metro area is VERY spread out. Avondale is still a budding community and is mostly made up of stucco track homes and McMansions. If you want to live closer to nightlife but still be within a reasonable commute distance, I recommend finding a place to live in Glendale. There is a small night life in Glendale and the old downtown Glendale is quite historic yet it's still close enough to get to downtown Phoenix for clubs and concerts. Avondale is north of Glendale and downtown Phoenix is Southeast.

Glendale is a good choice and one thing that Niq didn't mention is that Glendale is home to the Arizona Cardinals and the University of Phoenix Stadium. Lots of bars in the area for that reason. Eventually you will be able to see your Eagles play. Avondale is actually southwest of Glendale. The commute would be a rat race each day. Plus the rents really vary greatly here in the valley. You'd be paying up to 50% more in Scottsdale for the same place you could rent in Glendale, Avondale or Goodyear. I personally would live in Goodyear. It's adjacent to Avondale on the west. Goodyear has all the stores you need and is home to the new Cleveland Indians and Cincinatti Reds spring training facility. http://www.ci.goodyear.az.us/

The other users are right and Goodyear & Litchfield Park are very nice cities to live. Avondale and the cities I mention are very close to Glendale and the Cardinals stadium. There are many places there and still growing. For now due to the economy growth has slowed but it will be back up and growing. THe city has a lot of plans for the West Valley (Glendale/West Phoenix/Goodyear/Litchfield Park Etc.) Traveling to Tempe or Scottsdale id a pain.

You are very fortunate to have any job at all in this economy let alone Arizona. You can find places in Avondale to live. I would not commute from Scottsdale and Tempe it is just too far. I'm sure Phoenix would give you all the night life, and concerts you want. I think if you can handle Philadelphia's traffic you can handle Avondale's. The streets are laid out perpendicular, and are easy to get around in, except in Phoenix where there is a shortage on left turn arrows, and too many one way streets. Live in Avondale the rent is cheaper.
